I sat looking at my blog last night, essentially my thoughts surrounded blogs & themes. I wasn’t sure my blog had a central theme, as many appear to. I write of environmental issues, self sufficiency, simplicity, depleting resources, alternative energies, spiritual issues and a host of other things that may enter my head from time to time.
As I read back through old posts I discovered my theme….a love for all things natural, simple, it was simply wrapped in a hundred different colours.
For a few years now we have been enveloped by a world of threats.
Threats of declining top soil and food production, threats of a poisoned environment, overpopulation threats, threats of declining resources, wars, the collapse of the world’s biodiversity, crooked governments and the threats they pose to liberty and justice, one could go on listing for hours. What do all of these threats do for us? How do they make you feel?
For me it is the stark realisation that our world in future years will not be the glorious wonder it could be….at least not in my time, or our children’s.
For many, admitting we have some very, VERY large challenges ahead is too much, burying ones head in the sand and denying there must be consequence is easier.
For others the middle road is easier, yes, we have problems but they can all be fixed. For still others, the “Doomers” there is no resolution and we will starve, have zombies chasing us and be interned in government work camps.
Not for me to decide where you will end up, let’s face it, the only control we have is over ourselves and how we perceive, how we react, how we prepare. I believe life will get harder, in a myriad of ways, we will do without a huge amount of “comforts” we take for granted right now; however I am choosing to see that as a positive.
Certainly we are going to have to work physically harder than many of us are used to, there will be such drastic changes in every facet of our lives, (just think about anything within 10 feet of you…oil was involved in its production or storage somewhere), however I believe these things will bring a simple honesty to our lives.
I don't believe it will be as dire as some suggest, nor do I believe it will be as simple as others suggest. I do see communities once again becoming REAL communities; where we learn to share more, care more, where villages once again raise children, where what we need wont come from another state or country but from within our local regions.
Having said all that I am not going to pretend it is going to be easy. It’s about how we choose to react. I am choosing to see it as a learning curve. Making do, learning the old ways, some new ways, simplifying. Reality tells me that all this is great for many, reality also tells me it won’t be a great reality for those who die off from starvation, and weather based disasters, resource wars etc etc.
I guess my long winded message is about facing things head on and choosing a positive, no matter how hard it is. It is very easy to get bogged down into the “what are we going to do” thought pattern.
My answer, and this is just my way remember, is to take a worrying post and consider how I would get through it. My answer is, planning, learning new skills, adjusting, and finding the silver lining, no matter how thin it may be. What do you do?
Take care of you and yours:)

Hi Molly,
A very thought provoking post.
I have to admit I'm one step from being a doomer. I think it has something to do with my very cynical veiw of society and humanity as a whole.
Like you, I think we need to face the problems awaiting us headon, learning as we go.
And for those relying on our Governments to do the right thing and act quickly and decisively.....
Hmmm, I think that's were the Doomers come in.
Hi Nevyn & thanks:) I think we listen to too much negativity, the news is full of it, magazines are full of it, blogs can be full of it and so is the radio etc etc etc.
I dont think our govt has the answers, I think we the people do, and when we need to we do it, as history has shown. I think we can get through, as long as we come together.
Excellent post Molly. I wrote recently of how the British scientist James Lovelock had upset me by predicting that nothing we do will make a difference. Well be dammed to him I say. I'll just keep right on trying to make my patch of this wonderful world as perfect as I can.
Margaret
Hi Margaret, thanks for dropping by! I agree, ignore the nay-sayers, history has shown we are capable of incredible things when we work together!
Great post! I am someone who was born a pessimist, and often have to work at 'finding the positive' or believing that everything happens for a reason & that it will all work out how it is supposed to... but I feel much less overwhelmed by the issues you've referred to, now I have discovered my 'mantra' for life (thanks to some soul searching, and reading blogs like yours!)...
Make sure the things you do make you happy, keep you healthy and save you money. Be prepared, live frugally, and make the most of everything you have! Show kindness and gratitude to Earth and all it's creatures!
Hi Molly - I agree with your post. It is the state of affairs in my country, as well as the world in general, that prompted my husband and me to begin the journey back to basic living - learning the skills of a simpler time, using our labor to work toward self-sufficiency. It's hard to know where this world will be in future years - but I agree how well we fair will be up to us as individuals. We can't count on government or anyone else to provide the type of lives we wish to live. It's up to us to build the lives we desire - in our immediate environment, and by getting more involved in the legislative issues important to us. Those are my thoughts anyway.
Hi Dixie, glad the blog was a positive ionfluence. LOVE your mantra!
Hi BTBL, I agree, it is difficult to know where things will end up, and like you I believe we are responsible for ourselves and outcomes, great thoughts :)
No, no zombies!
I think the biggest challenge we have is overcoming our own faults, and our own apathy.
If we can do that, we can solve anything. And I believe we can do it :-)
Thanks for such a thoughtful post.
Hi Daharja, your'e right, it is up to us ultimately, it will be race against time though I suspect, and many won't get by easily.
I've always thought your blog was one of the models for how to stick to a central theme and message. And do it well! I agree with you and the others; things will change I think but not be unbearable. Attitude and resourcefulness have a lot to do with how well people fare. But really, more of us have got to be willing to change our wasteful ways or we are all going to suffer.
Hi ER and thanks. I'm with you, attitude & resourcefulness will be the key to how well we fare in the days ahead.
Sadly I don't think many will change until they are forced to...many enjoy their comforts too much.
