My carrots, cabbages and onions have sprouted, planted a little too close together but hey, nothing like square foot gardening LOL.
This morning as I was going out to enjoy the cool brought in by the overnight rain (not enough to do much more than dampen the paths), when I caught something out of the corner of my eye........a couple of the wild ducks. They were making themselves at home, particularly interested in being close to the chook pen, not sure if it was the company they sought or the feed they obviously could smell in there. They stayed for about an hour then flew off again in the direction of the local river. I have seen these two every day since we moved in, obviously a couple, very sweet.
This morning I am planting out some chives, silverbeet and more cabbage, along with some peas, (snow and standard types). With the weather very slowly starting to cool it's the perfect time to get them in.
Hubby has finished the retic out the front, which means I can finally get the front garden in thank heavens! It has looked like a bomb site out there for so long, however there was no way I was planting when it was heading for summer, nothing would have survived too well.
The front will be mostly what I call my "vase collection". Anything that will look good in a vase will go in here along with a few miniature natives to bring the birds and the bees. I love the cottage garden look, essentially because most of the plants require little maintenance or water.
I am so looking forward to winter! This summer was just horrid, one of the hottest in our recorded history. Work this year is focusing on getting the wicking beds up and running and under cover and the rain water tanks in.
Gone are the days when we could plant our veggie gardens in full sun..........has your weather changed too?
